LaFerrari: The fastest Ferrari road car ever comes with just one name

After months of anticipation, Ferrari’s replacement to the legendary Enzo supercar was unveiled today at the Geneva International Motor Show. It’s called LaFerrari; it’s Ferrari's first hybrid, and the fastest road car ever built under the Prancing Stallion logo.
The name of Ferrari’s new flagship has been under question for sometime. Many expected it to be called the F70, and then it was rumored to be the F150 (highly amusing for us in America). The name LaFerrari however, is even worse — hearkening back to the Dodge La Femme of 1956 —  but this is Ferrari. It can, and will, do whatever it likes.
When the sheets were removed, the Ferrari stand at Geneva erupted into cheers, clapping, and rather a lot of pushing and shoving. And for good reason, too. LaFerrari is simply beautiful. In fact, it looks better than expected, as it presents sleek, swooping lines, and limits the aggressive edge of the Enzo. That ferociousness is still present at the front with its massive hood vents and sharp chin, but it blends elegance and speed in a wondrous fashion. The interior looks as breathtaking and futuristic as you would expect as well, with its digital display cluster and Alcantara wrapped surfaces.
Beneath the skin, LaFerrari does not disappoint. A V-12 motor punches out 800 hp, but when you add the 163 additional hp provided by the coupled electric motor, a grand total of 963 raging ponies are unleashed, comfortably outdoing the 903 hp produced by LaFerrari’s arch nemesis, the McLaren P1.

Project 370Z live photos: 2013 Chicago Auto Show

A year ago Nissan launched a social media-directed Nissan 370Z build-up called "Project 370Z" at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.

The idea was to capture the passion and knowledge of Nissan Z fans, online, to help direct the creation of a unique, one-off Nissan 370Z with readily available aftermarket parts and accessories.

"We thought it would be interesting to harness the power of social media to reach out to Z enthusiasts – the people who are doing this to their own cars every day," said Jon Brancheau, vice president, Nissan Marketing.

The finished Project 370Z car, which currently is on display at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, has more than 500 horsepower (a bump from the 332 hp on a stock 370Z) and performance features like a GReddy Twin Turbo kit with Type RZ Blow Off Valves and a GReddy Turbo Ti-C Exhaust. It rides low on VOLK TE37SL custom-finished wheels.

The next step in this campaign takes Project 370Z to the track. Social media followers are invited to vote for a privately owned Nissan Z to compete against the project car at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in mid-March. Follow along, or enter your Z in the contest, at https://www.facebook.com/NissanPerformance.

As Nissan said, "You helped us build it. Now it needs a challenger."

Toyota unveils 2014 Tundra at 2013 Chicago Auto Show

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the redesigned 2014 Tundra full-size pickup truck at a press conference at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

Tundra has been a quality leader with Toyota’s DNA of quality, dependability and reliability. The industry has recognized Tundra with a myriad of awards over the last 12 years, including winning the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study for seven years running in the Full-Size Pick Up segment. Not resting on its laurels, the 2014 Tundra will be redesigned, inside and out, representing the first major change since the launch of the current generation for the 2007 model year.

The redesigned Tundra continues to be a truck with true American roots that was once again engineered by Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., and its new look designed by Calty Design Research centers in Newport Beach, Calif., and Ann Arbor. Finally, Tundra continues to be assembled exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, in San Antonio, Texas.

“Toyota prides itself on listening to its customers and the development of the 2014 American-born Tundra is a perfect example,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “Tundra’s new exterior design and all-new interior were inspired by customer feedback requesting a more chiseled exterior and refined interior with improved driver ergonomics, and easy-to-use technology, giving customers more of what they want instead, in addition to what they need.”

The 2014 Tundra will have a grade strategy consisting of the hard-working SR, volume-leading SR5, the well-appointed Limited, and two premium grades: “Platinum” and the all-new “1794 Edition.” The new 1794 Edition is a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, on which the Tundra plant is located in San Antonio. Tundra is offered in three cab styles, two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab and four-door CrewMax

Ford Focus TrackSTer live photos: 2013 Chicago Auto Show

Ford Focus TrackSTer

One of three different Focus ST builds, the TrackSTer is to be the first debut for the Project ST campaign. Project ST is a relationship between fifteen52, Ken Block and Ford. The project goal is to make today’s hot hatch king – the Ford Focus ST – even hotter.

“Using the CAS venue to debut the TrackSTer is bound to be one of the main highlights for the Project ST campaign,” said Brad Beardow, fifteen52 co-owner. “Chicago, if not the entire Midwest, seems to have more than its fair share of hot-hatch enthusiasts, and there’s just something so right about coming to CAS – in the dead of winter – and unveiling the hottest Focus ST anyone’s seen so far.”

Since fifteen52 launched Project ST in the late summer of 2012, interest in the campaign has grown tremendously. Regular updates via the project-st.com website have captivated an ever larger group of enthusiasts, and as each of the three cars nears completion, fans throughout the country can look forward to seeing them in person as fifteen52 plans to bring the cars to a variety of 2013 events.

TrackSTer is a Focus ST that is destined to feel just as at home on a road course as on the way to a road course. Using only top-quality engine, transmission and suspension components, TrackSTer is designed to appeal to the hardcore performance enthusiast.

Inspired by Ford’s rich global history of small performance cars, fifteen52 has worked closely with Ford Racing to build a Focus ST that pays homage to such cars of the past, while also demonstrating just how far today’s Ford performance envelope can be pushed.

Said Project ST partner Ken Block, “Teaming up with fifteen52 for this project was an obvious choice for me. They’ve got a great understanding of what’s hot in the small car performance marketplace right now, both from the style perspective and from the performance end of things. With the TrackSTer, they’ve worked closely with both Ford Racing and Mountune to put together a potent package that blends on-road performance with on-track performance. I can’t wait to actually get this car out on a track and put it through the paces.”

Volvo updates the V70, XC70 and S80 - photos

New engines, redesigned interiors

In one fell swoop, Volvo has unveiled the 2012 V70, XC70 and S80.

On the design front, the updated models feature redesigned headlights, restyled wheels, and new door mirrors with LED indicators.

Inside, the cabin has been significantly improved with higher quality materials and advanced technology. Highlights include a new steering wheel, a redesigned center stack, and revised trim. In the tech department, there's a new Sensus infotainment system (with a five-inch or seven-inch touchscreen display), an updated adaptive cruise control system, Pedestrian Detection, and City Safety technology which automatically brakes the car if a collision is imminent.

Under the hood, two new engines are available. The 2.0-liter D3 is carried over from the S60/V60 and produces 163 hp (122 kW / 165 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

On the other hand, the twin-turbo 2.4-liter D5 has been upgraded to develop 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 440 Nm (324 lb-ft) of torque - an increase of 10 hp (7 kW / 10 PS) and 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Despite the extra power, Volvo says fuel consumption has been reduced by up to eight percent.

According to Volvo President and CEO Stefan Jacoby, "These cars mark yet another step forward in our determination to be the brand that best interprets what buyers of modern prestige cars want. Concern for the individual's well-being is the very core of our Scandinavian origin. On this basis we create a logical, intuitive and ergonomically optimized driver's environment that promotes a feeling of relaxed control."

Cadillac ATS Drives Big Sales In January

Cadillac has announced yesterday their best domestic monthly sales in 23 years. January numbers saw a sharp 47 percent increase thanks in large part to the new ATS sedan.

Cadillac’s hope of attracting new buyers to the brand with the ATS seems to be paying off. A massive 56 percent of ATS buyers either came from competing brands or didn’t trade in a car. One-fifth of buyers were under the age of 35.

The ATS is a solid performer in the luxury sport sedan segment – sales numbers aside. The sedan has 50/50 weight distribution, rides on GM’s Magnetic Ride Control, and is available with all-wheel-drive. Power comes from three different engine options: a 2.5-liter inline four, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four, or the 3.6-liter V-6.

Both four cylinders offer upwards of 30 mpg highway and the 3.6-liter V-6 churns out 321 hp and 274 lb-ft or torque. Prices start at $33,095 for the 2.5-liter.

GM, DOE And Others Partner To Bring EV Charging To The Workplace

General Motors is taking big steps with the U.S. Department of Energy and 12 other companies in creating charging stations for their employees’ electric vehicles.

The DOE’s Workplace Charging Challenge is designed to increase the number of employers with workplace charging systems tenfold within five years. The hope is to expand the electric vehicle infrastructure and consumer exposure to the idea of driving electric vehicles.

“Since the introduction of the Chevrolet Volt, we have made a commitment to lead by example on workplace charging and to engage in encouraging other companies to help provide the infrastructure supporting the electric vehicle market,” said Mike Robinson, GM vice president.

Participating companies are 3M, Chrysler, Duke Energy, Eli Lilly and Company, Ford, General Electric, Google, Nissan, San Diego Gas & Electric, Siemens, Tesla, and Verizon.

The companies are also promoting their EV Everywhere Challenge that is dedicated to the development and commercialization of next generation electric vehicles that compete with today’s gas-powered vehicles.
